I was wondering this the other day when someone posted a question in really bad english yet the complainants had obviously understood it in its entirety but still felt the need to gripe.
So long as it conveys the meaning it shouldn't make a difference.
If it is a blatant error that leaves you wondering what the person was trying to say then it is better to leave the question rather than be a pedant and criticise someone.
I tend to use mostly correct english (I know this should have a capital.. proper noun) because I can, but when I txt i use abrv8tns n opt 4 spelngs lyk tym 2 sav letrs n kp msgs shrtr.
So does that make me wrong?
Having said all that surely it should be 'who else hates people WHO comment...'
Sorry, I will go and lie in a darkened room for a while.

I don't HATE it, but I do feel a bit irritated that a lot of people to whom English is the first language cannot, or cannot be bothered, to master the basics of grammar and spelling in their mother tongue.
I never comment on it here because I realise that there are people with varying degrees of dyslexia who might post, but I assume that even they could use the spellchecker.

Hi, it is sad that people have nothing better to do with their time than to sit and pick up other peoples spelling mistakes,i wonder do they every stop to think that maybe these people do have learning difficulties such as dyslexia? The dyslexics on here must get very disheartened by this,at least they have the nerve to try. Many people have problems with reading and writing but that does not make them a lesser person because of this.

I agree with Freakin. I got irritated once on here when someone pointed out a spelling mistake but I've never forgotten how to spell that word again, lol! I'm glad it was pointed out because I'm happy to learn.

Purely from a functional point of view, as a guy who sometimes maintains search functions for a living, a non-standard spelling system plays merry hell with my job.
You want to find something from your blog or chat history? Remember how you spelt it those years ago - or, better, spell it in the standard way the first time!
Sorry about the rant. Apologies to dyslexics everywhere. I appreciate your positions and the difficulties people like me put you in.

Do you really think that when people do comment on your grammar or spelling they are trying to irritate you ?
Maybe their just trying to teach you, so that you don't make the same mistakes again in the future.
oh, and I see you did use the spell check before posting your question.
Good job to.
I'm sure you didn't want me to correct your spelling.

Personally i think it is disgusting to comment on someone spelling, not everyone is good at spelling and even spell check is not infallible, many times i have used the spell check only to find after i have submitted it that there is still a word spelt wrong and then have had to edit it. I don't care how people spell things, if i can read between the lines and understand what they are asking i will still answer, without comment on their spelling.

i hate when people type their whole question/answer in "txt spk"
its like, you dont need to! and no-one can understand it!
but i dont mind a few grammar mistakes or spelling mistakes, i dont bother using proper grammar on here (but i try to keep my spelling good)
sometimes the person might be dyslexic so its not their fault
and when i write a question i always put every word with a captial letter to make it more interesting :)

No, because my grammar and range of vocabulary (and also my spelling) are impeccable.
Those people that complain are generally lacking in the grammar department themselves, and so their opinions are worth jack.
Yes, it annoys me when people get their grammar wrong, but I do not point it out to them unless they ask me to, or if they are giving wrong or misleading information in their answer.

I'm afraid that I'm one of the "guilty" ones who point out errors in spelling (but they could be typing errors) and grammar. This is an Education and Reference site so why should those of us who are well-versed in grammar (mainly educated during the 40s and 50s) have to put up with the sub-standard efforts of those whose knowledge is inferior to ours? You may well complain of our correcting of your grammar but I bet you are only to willing to accept answers and advice from those who offer them to you.
