I think RowanOak left one out: 1/2. To make money for the government of England.
That was the primary reason for most colonies getting royal sanction and resources, no matter what nation they came from. Some colonies, like the Plymouth colony in North America, were founded for other reasons (dumping troublemakers was always a popular choice..), but Virginia was a money-making enterprise first, last and everything in between.
