I had an extension done to my house about 8 years ago. The roofspace was extended also. The builders only put felt under the tiles on the new part of the roof and left the old part as it was (this is a 1930s house). They also neglected to put any insulation between the rafters so it is always freezing in the winter.

I don't know where you live, so I don't know for sure what will meet your local code, but you can get some blow in insulation. Open the eaves and blow it in each end, between the rafters, but make sure to use the baffles before you replace the fascia. Most lumberyards have the machines that they lend out with the purchase of the insulation. I hope this helps you.

you only have two choices, remove the ceiling or make holes to install insulation. But, there is another option, bring more heat into the area, and mix the air (with a fan(s). Electric heat or portable fuel heaters would work.

You can either remove select portions of the ceiling and blow in insulation or remove it all and staple in roll insulation. You could consider putting up an additional ceiling over the existing one that would have foam panels under it.
