if 6 feet of soil is excavated and a vault is buried in it then the vault will fill a considerable amount in the space. where then does the excess soil go?

There is always a place that needs a little fill. It is no accident that graves have mounds over them, but vaults do take up more space than coffins. There are probably as many answers to your question as there are gravediggers.

Most of the time the grave-keeper, piles the extra ground in the back of the cemetery. Once the ground has settled after a period of time, the grave-keeper will add more on top. And plant grass seed or lay sod on the freshly placed dirt.

At our local cemetary they add the excess to a compost bin and it is used for flower gardens they have in the cemetery, and for when they plant new trees etc.
