I need to retrieve some files from a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk, but whenever I insert it in the computer floppy disk slot, I receive a message saying that I need to format the disk. I believe that if I format it, I will loose the existing files on the disk. Please help me as I need to retrieve these files. Urgent assistance would be appreciated!!!

When it says "Please format the disc" it means that the disc is corrupted and the data inside it is already lost. But yeah, try the recovery tools mentioned above I never tried them on floppies, but perhaps they might work! Good luck!

Bad disk you're probably s.o.l.

Go download pc inspector file recovery (link below). It's free too, just read carefully.

After it's installed then insert your diskette and have pc inspector do a scan of the disk. Be careful not to scan your hard drive or you will be there all day long.

I warn you that you may end up with corrupted files if you get anything back at all, but it's better than the nothing you have right now.

I really don't think they make them anymore. I've never seen one that big. They have now pretty much gone to burning cd's which hold probably as much if not more than you mentioned. I have a flash drive that holds 256 mb. They are great. About the size of a small thin bic lighter and plugs into usb port. Mine has about 177 3 1/2 disks that I copied onto it and still lots of room for more. Good Luck p.s. The newest pc's don't even have a floppy drive. I plan to make them put one in my new one. :)

Hi. It sounds like they may be formatted in a file system your computer does not recognize. Try a PC repair shop (which has many types or disk readers) and maybe they can help you copy to new 3.5 floppies.

Try these recovery tools.

UNDELETE PLUS (FREE):
Undelete Plus is a free versatile program that will work with all the latest versions of Windows and can handle both FAT and NTFS file systems. It’s equally at home with removable media too so you can recover files from memory cards and flash drives. Tick the box to select a drive and click Start Scan to analyse the drive. This can take quite a while to complete on a large drive.
When it’s completed the scan the right-hand pane shows a list of the files available for recovery. You can sort these into file types by selecting from the pane on the left. Select a location to save the undeleted files at the bottom of the screen. You have the option of retaining the original folder structure if you’re recovering entire folders.
It can be downloaded from:
http://www.undelete-plus.com/

RECUVA (FREE)
Another good free one from:

Your belief is correct. In general, formatting kills the disk.

If that floppy is from a Mac and you're on a PC, or vice versa, I don't think they can read each other's floppies.

Sorry.

Blow out your floppy drive. There might be dirt in there.

Try going into DOS mode, or START, RUN, "CMD" and see if you can access it from the cmd window.

Sometimes these floppies just go bad.
