It's terracotta tile, so it doesn't wipe off as well as glazed ceramic. Without ruining the tile, can I sand it down? It's just a few places, but it looks yucky.

Take an old fashioned blunt edged scraper (for removing paint, but not a razor blade type) and carefully scrape it down. Put tape on the tile first to protect it from the metal. If this doesn't work, I'd say to carefully chisel it out and replace it (the grout).

Sigh, yep scraping is likely the best bet. Even with non glazed terra cotta however a three or four step wiping process with a sponge with have left you with Dust to mop away. You'll know next time.

You still may have a problem however; in that if it's unglazed; such as Saltilo; you could also damage the tile edges by scraping. I guess I have to ask,,,no offense; If it isn't a glazed tile; why isn't it? It also sounds like your tile doesn't have depressed edges, allowing for grout to come flush with the surface to be wiped back to just below?
