It's like at McDonalds when they ask if you want fries or a drink with your burger. I can understand why McDonalds asks this - they know that you can buy Coke or potatoes anywhere, so they want to make a sale with you. But at the Post Office, you can't buy your stamps anywhere else. They have a monopoly. Why does it matter if you by them today, tomorrow, or next week? When you need them, by god, you will certainly know where to go to get them ! And you certainly don't have many choices !
Thanks .

Ryan, be nice.
The main point is, people don't buy more stamps per year unless they mail more packages and letters per year. If the post office wants to increase net sales, they need to find a way for you to mail more things. Buying stamps today instead of next week does absolutely nothing to the USPS's bottom line. Mailing more letters this year than last year DOES add to their bottom line.

Most employers REQUIRE their customer service reps (including cashiers) to ask certain questions...
Also, what if you were meaning to buy stamps and mail a package and you forgot to ask about stamps? You wouldn't be complaining then. lol.

The Postal provider prints a form of stamps so human beings could have possibilities. The madonna and baby stamps are meant to be for all Christians, no longer basically Catholics - Protestants think of Mary grew to become into Jesus's mom, and because they are celebrating a beginning, the mum is definitely in contact! easily the secular Christmas stamps (snowflakes this twelve months) regularly outsell the religious ones via a great margin - something like 5 to a million. Your post place of work additionally should have Hannukah stamps and stamps with motorcycles, Disney characters, quilts, baseball gamers, superheroes, and so on., plus Judy Garland and Ronald Reagan and the pink heart. easily there is a few stamp on the post place of work you are able to truly like - ask what "commemoratives" they have.

They are told to do that. That's why you see all of the little items at the grocery check out... gum, disposable cameras, batteries, etc.
The post office doesn't need to find a way for you to mail more things. You either have things to mail - meaning you have a need for stamps - or you don't! They are told to ask if you need to buy stamps because it's increasing sales for them. AND...there are actually people that need to buy a book of stamps and forget to do it! So, it's kinda nice sometimes to have the reminder.
I think you've put a little more thought into this than is really necessary. Ryan wasn't being rude...he was telling the truth! I wouldn't necessarily say that this was a "stupid" question...just a little too overthought.

I never thought about that, but you're right. Recently I went there and they did ask me that. I guess maybe they want you to buy them there instead of at the grocery store or Sam's or something. A lot of places sell stamps now, but I'm sure they do it more as a courtesy than for the profit. They are still issued by the USPS, though.

They want the sale. You can buy stamps at the grocery store, convenience store, office supply stores, not only the post office. You do have a choice.....

Its called cross-selling. Always ask if there is anything else you can do for a person. You never know when you can make another sell. It applies to anyhing for fries, stamps to insurance, autos.

They are a business just like anyone else. It's the exact same thing as "would you like fries with that?" It's an upsell. They get thousands of dollars over the course of a year from that simple little question.

you answered your own question. The post office is JUST LIKE mcdonald's..it's a business. At any company trying to make money, the staff is trained to offer you more products you might want to buy. So, they figure, if they ask, people might say, "yeah, what the heck, give me 10"..i've done it. This was a stupid question.
