There are many many different sizes, and a few different types.
Range hoods may have one or two types of filters... some have just a screen, while others also have a grease trap filter...and some have just the grease trap filter, hehehe. And they come in many many different sizes. Your best bet is to know what kind of range hood youve got, and if possible, the model number. Often, this info can be found on a munufacturers plate, under the hood, sometimes under the filter, or near the bulb.
Most bathroom exhaust fans do not use filters. Their main purpose is to vent the moist air out of the home... no grease to worry about.
If youve got an exhaust set up for a shop of some type, then it depends on the type of shop... for example, a finishing booth might have paint trap material as a filter... a wood shop might have a dust filter... someone who uses solvents to clean with might use a charcoal filter to help there.
So... as you can see there are a few different kinds of "extractors" or exhaust fans.... might help if you told us which kind youre asking about, hehehe...
Again, if its for the kitchen, look for the manufacturer's plate on the unit, and take that info with you when you go shopping.
(If you have a scanner/copier you can actually photocopy the filter, and take the paper with you, when you shop.. you can fold it up and stick it in a pocket or purse, and pull it out to compare with the filters on the shelf at the store, hehe)
