How do you get a six:

(1,1,4)
(1,2,3)
(1,3,2)
(1,4,1)
(2,1,3)

(2,2,2)
(2,3,1)
(3,1,2)
(3,2,1)
(4,1,1)

there are 10 ways...

thus the probability is 10/6^3 = 5/108

note: singular: die..... plural: dice

The chances are 10 out of 216:

1 1 4
1 2 3
1 3 2
1 4 1
2 1 3
2 2 2
2 3 1
3 1 2
3 2 1
4 1 1

Also, the plural is "three dice." One is called a "die."

There are 6^3=216 ways of throwing 3 dice.
How many of these triples will render a sum of 6?
1 1 4 6
1 2 3 6
1 3 2 6
1 4 1 6
2 1 3 6
2 2 2 6
2 3 1 6
3 1 2 6
3 2 1 6
4 1 1 6
Note that there are 10 triples yielding a sum of 6 out of 216, so the probability is 10/216.

Ah man, I used to know this... let's see if I can remember...

The chances of getting a six on a six sided die is 1/6- when you have two dice, the chances of getting 12 is 1/36, the chances of getting 2 is also 1/36. Scoring 3 has a chance of 2/36, 4 is 3/36, 5 is 4/36, and 6 is 5/36.

So, with three dice, what's going to happen. Scoring 18 is a 1/216 chance, and there is the same chance of scoring 3. So what could the chance of scoring 6 be... would it be 5/216? scoring 4 on three dice should be a 3/216, scoring 5 would be a 9/216 chance, so scoring exactly six on three dice, would that be a 12/216 chance...

Let's check it out
D1-3 D2-2 D3-1= 6
D1-3 D2-1 D3- 2= 6
D1- 2 D2- 3 D3-1= 6
D1- 1 D2- 3 D3- 2=6
D1- 1 D2- 2 D3- 3=6
D1- 2 D2-1 D3- 3= 6

D1- 1 D2-1 D3- 4
D1- 1 D2-4 D3-1
D1-4 D2- 1 D3- 1

D1- 2 D2- 2 D3-2

So, that seems to show a 9/216 chance of throwing exactly six on three dice- which will crunch down, divide both sides by three... 3/72, then that divides by three again- 1/24!

God, took me so long to work that out, shame on me... and even then it was wrong, as the bloke above me showed- it's 10/216, or 5/108

10 ways to get 6

1 1 4
1 4 1
4 1 1
1 2 3
1 3 2
2 1 3
3 1 2
2 3 1
3 2 1
2 2 2

There are 6*6*6 = 216 possible outcomes with 3 dice.

So the probability is 10/216 = .04629

4.63%

Here's the Vages approach:

There are 216 possible rolls, and 10 rolls which give a total of 6.

206 rolls give a value other than 6.

The ODDS of rolling 6 would be stated as 206 to 10, or 20.6 to 1 against

But don't confuse the odds with the probability. The probability was corretly calculated by the other answerers.

Work out all the combinations of getting a six, and then the total combinations, divide one by the other and there's your answer.

You should do your own homework.
