My mother, on her deathbed, told me I had to let go of the past or I'd never enjoy the present or the future. It took a while for those to really hit home. But now, I really try to live by them. :@)

Just a few...

#1. "You'll never amount to anything". But, to "their" dissapointment, I DID amount to something I love and that's what really counts.

#2. "It didn't happen". Ohhhh, but, it DID. And it altered me forever.

#3. My Dad, shaking, through tears: "If I could take that [insert illness] onto myself, I WOULD. I don't know what to do....You have to be strong, K". Probably the only time I've ever seen my Dad weak, cry, or heard how passionately he loves me. He's not the most verbally demonstrative chap in the whole, wide world :-).

#4. "I understand". "You have a shi$tload of knowledge about so and so". What can I do to help?" You're really beautiful". Or, "you can do it!". Perhaps these words would not be considered life changing to some. But, confidence boosters of ANY kind, emotional support, understanding, *genuine* concern, and care? Kinda rare, in my experience. But, I am forever changed by any instance. When life has thrown me curve balls, mostly everyone walked out. Not too many stuck around or walked into my life then. There have been a couple though and I'd never forget them, how they've helped, nor how they made me feel.

#5. "You've been accepted into the PhD program". A big accomplishment, in MY eyes, particularly in light of repeatedly being told #1 in different forms by various "authority figures" and others who supposedly had my best interests at heart.

Yeah that is true about the good and bad. I'd like to remember the good though. I know it's not exactly what you asked but still applies; The first time I heard my favorite radio personality speak, it defined my life. Why? Because listening to him and how he spoke his mind without fear made me fall in love with radio and want to pursue that as a career. That was when I was thirteen and I've pursued and been living my dreams ever since :) Luckily I've got to meet and thank the man who changed my life and made me realize my purpose for my life. That was the best thing ever, to pay my respects. FYI we had a nice lengthy chat that will forever be a best moment in my life

Yes it was in the New Testament when Paul wrote one of his letters to an early church on the subject of love. It changed my whole perspective about life, our very existence and what the true purpose of everything is. Love is all that will remain when Faith and Hope are gone.

Yes. Woody Allen, in Hannah and Her Sisters. There's a scene near the end of the movie, where he goes to a movie theater to see a Marx Brothers movie.

He thinks to himself that it's just not worth it to try to find all the answers; it will just drive you crazy (or something like that).

Yes. When I was in the 10th grade and feeling worthless and thinking about dropping out of school, my Biology teacher told me I could become an engineer or a doctor, that I was smart enough. He said this in front of the whole class.

Thank you, Mr. O'Rourke.

Yes. A couple of times, but always in retrospect, interestingly enough. At the time I had no idea those particular words and those specific thoughts would affect me at all.

I have siblings that did nothing with thier lives. They are all older than me and my one sister we have not heard from in years. The last time my family and I spoke to my brother he was a drunk and into other things that are messing up his life and my other sister was killed by the horrible choices she made in her life. The one thing that was said to me that changed my life forever was by my father who told me, "You are my last hope, don't make those mistakes." That was said to me right after my sister was killed. I love and respect my family more than ever and try my hardest to make them proud and to respect myself enough to do my best

Yes. When the Doctor handed over my son and said "Here is your son. Your a mommy now." That changed my life completely.
