I have always strived to understand everything about the world around us, and I have rasied my kids the same way. Why do most kids have no interest in understanding anything? (well maybe video games etc.) Am I the minority? Are most people not naturally curious and want to learn? It is difficult to explain to my students "why we have to know this?" other than to not be ignorant to the world around us. I was not a nerd in high school, but I still enjoyed learning new things.

Because children don't have to use thier imaginations for anything anymore. Look at the toys for sale now days, the dolls talk, the stuffed animals make animal noises, and for crying out loud the books read themselves! I had tinker toys and lincoln logs, and to see that they now come with pre-formed pieces so the kids don't have to figure out how to build them makes my heart hurt. And you probably shouldn't get me started on tv and video games. The point is, the don't need to be curious. Everything is laid out for them at such an early age now with the advent of technology, that they lost alot of the simple things that children should still have; wonder, curiousity, and sadly even the desire to go outside and chase butterflies.

I am a bit of a geek, and I am fairly intelligent. You would never know that I barely passed classes enough to graduate. (1988) From my own personal history I can tell you that kids need to learn the basics - but need inspiration to get a passion for learning. What I know mostly comes from my own study. I know about the things that I have passion for. What I truly wish to credit my teachers with is the understanding that without knowledge a persons ability to have free will is diminished. A person that does not continually learn over his or her lifetime will have less choices. In order to adapt to change and to be alive in the states above the mode of survival.
I applaud you and encourage you to inspire future generations. The be the match to the fuse of desire for lifelong learning.

That's what secular humanism and atheism have done to a generartion. Believe you came from monkeys and question morality.
