SCREETCHHHHHHHH( fingernails on blackboard). Yeah, his name will do that. Always seemed to hold grudges against certain teams. Bruce Hood was far worse. You could mug a guy while on the ice, steal his jock strap, skates and stick, go to the guy's locker and clean that too out, and Hood still wouldn't call a penalty.

After the manufactured diving call when the hurricanes played florida
one- Jokiden hit LaRose. LaRose is 5'10 (officially) he fell. that got him a diving call.
two: one of the florida defenseman flat out tackles Justin Williams. Leaps up, jumps, grabs his legs and pulls him to the ice face first. And Williams got called for diving. Even Potvin (the Florida commentator now) said both calls were bogus.

And incidentally, the hurricanes lost the lead and the game in that third period.

Oh, and the local paper in sunrise had a story that day saying "watch for the hurricanes diving" Kerry Fraser must have been paid off or took the paper too seriously or something, he made both bogus calls.

Bill McCreary though- he's a good ref. I like him... how he could possibly be snubbed as best ref for Fraser I have no clue....

Yes!!!

Check with Michael Therrien then coach of the habs in the series against Carolina a few years back.

Does he mess up anymore than any other ref? probably not.
What I hate about him is that you get the feeling he wants to put himself above the game. His calls are generally inconsistent, while most refs can be accused of putting the whistle away in the third that's when Kerry usually thaws his out.

The stuff that he as let go for the last two periods seems to get called with 5 mins left. If its a penalty fine but he has to be one of the most inconsistent refs out there.

I must admit some of the newer refs have been brutal this year too. I think the one problem with the two ref system is that the younger ref defers to the experienced too often and calls get missed when the younger ref who is further from the play sees the infraction but doesn't call it to avoid embarrassing the more senior ref who was closer but may not have seen the infraction.

I've always had a grudge against Kerry Fraser. I even game him the nickname Kerry "Brow Raiser" Fraser.

Fraser wasn't much good when he was young, and now he's over the hill. I agree with the others who mentioned McGeough as well. But Lance Roberts is REALLY lost in space!

Every year, the NHLPA grants him best referee status (except 2005 they chose Bill McCreary).

Last year, 91% of NHL players picked Fraser as the best referee.

That is one of the criterion used to determine which referees will work in the playoffs and which don't.

The same thing for Leaf fans..........Leaf fans hate Kerry Fraser, but in the last 25 years, the Leafs have their highest winning percentage when Kerry Fraser refs their games.

Oh.............and can all the Douglas Gilmour fans give it a rest....Fraser made a mistake............but did it really cost them the series? LA's momentum started long before that pivotal point in the game. Jeesh!

I think the reason I hate Fraser is not because he is a bad ref (can't argue with the players who think he is good) but a ref should never make himself bigger than the game. A ref who cares more about his hair and keeping his name in the stats bugs me. I remember a quote once from a ref (sorry can't recall the name or whether it was even in hockey or football) but he said the biggest compliment to ref should be at the end of the game people ask - who was reffing as they never noticed him out there.

My only real recollection of Kerry Fraser was years ago.

In 1996, I was part of the group responsible for assigning numbers to the refs (the NHL switched from names to numbers to provide some 'anonymity' to officials)

The numbers were originally assigned via seniority so Andy Van Hellemond was #1, Kerry Fraser was #2, etc. As referee in chief (and in part because he was retiring in a few months), Van Hellemond didn't want to wear #1 so he took #26. He didn't want #1 because he didn't want the players to think he was egotistical. Because of that, Fraser tried to get #27 because he didn't want to be singled out by the players by being at the top of the totem pole. That ended up being rejected by Bryan Lewis and Fraser threw a fit because he was still trying to defend himself over the flack from 1993.

Speaking of 1993, as a hockey fan, I remember his missed call in the Los Angeles-Toronto series. Not something easily forgotten as it deprived Canadians of the Leafs-Habs final we so richly deserved. Even my wife could tell it was a penalty, and she can't stand hockey!

I always thought McGeough was one of the worst. He's more like the cartoon Mr McGoo.

To tell you the truth, I notice the refs less and less all the time. I'm too busy sweating it out every time McCabe is on the ice.
