The doctors that follow current research will not do routine checks starting at 36 weeks (but many still choose to do it that way, going against current standards).

There is no medical benefit in knowing whether you are starting to dilate or not at 36,37,38, or even 39 weeks. You could be 1cm, 50% effaced, and go into labor tomorrow; you could also be 4cm, 100% effaced, and not labor for days or weeks. Knowing what you are dilated to isn't going to make labor come faster, or give you any indication of when it may start. They only NEED to check your cervix if you are contracting and labor is suspected, or if you're past due and they need to know if you're favorable for induction.

With every internal vaginal exam comes with it the risk for infection, a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. So, weight the risks vs. benefits. Potential infection vs. satisfying your curiosity - is it worth the risk? For you maybe it is, but for me it wasn't.

Try to be patient and wait it out. Labor will start when it's ready, regardless of what you're dilated to today.

My Dr. checked me at 36 weeks and I was 1cm dialted and 50% effaced. But here I am at 39 weeks and 2cm dialted and 60% effaced. So just because you start dialting doesn't really mean a whole lot, the baby could still be weeks away. But I know what you mean by the I'm ready thing...I have been saying that for three weeks too! :) Good luck!

I'm due December 5th..and sooo ready too! I got tested for group b strep AND got checked for dilation at my 36 week visit. My doctor starts checking for dilation and effacement 36 weeks and every week after that...so I've been checked 3 times so far...every doctor is different though! Good luck....have lots of sex (to thin out the cervix), walk, and enjoy your last weeks of pregnancy! Congrats!

My doc told me she was going to check me at 39 weeks.. She also checked me when they did the group B strep test(that was at about 36 weeks.. he is engaged but I am not dilated or thinned D=), since she was already down there, lol
You can always request that they check you, if you are curious.. It wouldnt hurt to ask!
I am due Dec 13th and I am ready too! LOL
Good luck on your pregnancy!
Take care =)

They started checking me at 36 weeks... and then every week after that... It gets old but you normally can't wait to be checked at this point just to see if you have dialted!

Theres no need to worry, your just starting to get the normal aches and pains of pregnancy... I know when I was pregnant every little pain I felt I freaked out... the further along you get the less you will worry... mild cramping is normal... look at it this way, organs are getting moved around that have been in the same spot for years, it's bound to hurt a little bit... my doctor always told me, if I couldn't stand the cramping or I was bleeding similar to a period then thats when it's time to be seen by them! Good luck to you, your baby will be fine!

You might be ready, but baby isnt.

They usually dont check unless you've been having a lot of contractions and are showing signs of labor nearing.

Keep it up, you're almost done, you're doing a great job!

It depends, some doctors do, some don't. My doctor didn't check my dialation until 37 weeks. At 36 weeks she did test for strep b.
