Well any sp hybrid orbitals around a carbon atom are formed from the orbitals of that carbon atom. For hybrid orbitals, the name tells you what kind of orbitals hybridize and how many of each kind are involved.

So, sp means that 1 s and 1 p orbital hybridize.
sp2 means 1 s and 2 p orbitals...

OK?

I'm trying this from memory. You take a carbon atom that has an s orbital and 3 p orbitals. So when you hybridize it you get four sp^3 orbitals which makes carbon form 4 bonds in a tetrahedral geometry with other atoms
