Virtually every carrier requires at least a 1 year contract. Your best bet would be to get a pre-paid. The best pre-paid would be a Trac-Fone because they require no contract and you only pay for what you use. They are relatively cheap to buy (depends on what kind you want) and you can just buy minutes as you need them. Plus there is no maintenance fee as with m=virtually all other pre-paids. Most charge you a dollar a day whether or not you use the phone and some charge a dollar a day only when you use the phone.

Now the flip side is, if you want to be on say Verizon's network. You could go with an InPulse phone and get unlimited use mobile to mobile, but it will cost a dollar a day to have it, which ends up being the same as a basic contract plan. The upside is there is no contract.

In the end, you have to decide what best suits your needs. Do you call alot, text, etc. Are all your friends on a certain carrier? Is it only for emergencies?

My mom got me a TracFone to basically just have a phone for emergencies and to get ahold of her. I hardly use it, but it's nice to have if I need it.

pre pay is the only way with no contract but the cash purchse of the phone is similar to signing a contract.
