after watching a few of his services, and reading up a little about him, I'm convinced he's more of a counseling people advocate than a 'preacher'.... his message is upbeat, and psychologically great for people to hear, since it's more about you getting yourself what you need than 'god' handing it to you for good works.... he's really got it down to a science, that of telling folks what makes them feel good about themselves.... even going so far as telling women to shop at Victoria's Secret to help their marriages be happier!....
he's different..... is he the next BillyG?

edit... I'm not a believer, but a psychology-trained person and I see merit in the message, as far as it goes toward uplifting PEOPLE....

Joel Osteen seems like an overly happy person. It would be hard to believe that he has problems with his own marriage. With his happy giddy nature on televsion, he just seems" unhuman". There is something characteristically unrealistic about him. He is often criticized for neglecting the reality of situations (sin, etc). but overall, he's not a bad person. He just needs to address his critics' concerns on live television.

Olsteen is an effective fake. He's got it down to a science, while him and his wife rake in the dollars! No scripture in the Bible suggests that a wife should dress like a whore. Neither does shopping at Victoria's Secret keep a marriage happy. If anything, dressing like a whore cheapens the relationship. I agree that his message is upbeat, but it's the world view of God, which means it is designed to confuse the wicked. True believers don't buy into Olsteen's hype.

His message is good to the ears but not the soul. He says that God is good and will reward you with health and wealth, which by the way, wealth, that is what drives him. Basically, he has found a way to preach to rich people and tell them that it is OK for them to be rich. It makes them feel good and it brings in contributions. It might be what you want to hear, but its not what the bible says.
I've read that he has no cross in his church... and I can't escape the fact that he is driven by power and greed. A good and humble servant of the lord? I think not.

I enjoy listining to his sermon's as well. But I have often thought the same thing that you are saying... it's more of a message of positive thinking which I suppose has never hurt anyone, but you state a great observation in that they have it down to a science. They are bound to continue making a great deal of money. -and hey, I'll support anything that encourages my wife to continue dressing in sexy lingerie for me.

He's someone who has latched onto a good thing. He's become a millionare and continues to rake in money. I just really have trouble with televangelists. This man is putting on a really effective show. I don't think he is what he pretends to be.

I think your right.. I always feel pretty good about myself after watching him -- and I usually only watch him when I slept through church! I think he's a very positive person which, after hearing him preach, makes me a little more positive about life.
However, he's got nothing on Billy!

Personally I don't think it's balanced, and preaching should be. If he called himself a Christian motivational speaker, that's one thing....but to be a pastor means that you are given responsibility for ALL the needs of ALL the people in your 'flock' and his messages don't really meet ALL the needs to be taught, reminded, disciplined and accountable.
