Should we try to straighten them out by helping them get educated, find jobs, etc. or is that rewarding them for being criminals?

I guess it depends on the crime. Muderers, rapists, I would say No. Petty crimes or crimes in wich people were not hurt, yes. I believe in 2nd chances.

Criminals are criminals.
I think our jails and prisons should be cesspools instead of "Club Med's". A criminal should leave prison thankful they lived through it, if they leave at all !

Don't ever forget that a criminal made the choice to be what they are and do what they do. The consequences of the choice and the act should be swift and decisive.

Fear and deterrence are what is lacking in our judicial and penal system. Right now a prison sentence is just considered free room and board, time to hang out with the rest of the gang and work out a couple hours a day.

Crime wasn't so rampant when we had road gangs, the rock pile, solitary confinement and death row meant you were going to die and damn soon !

Education is the greatest gift to give anyone. Unfortunately, ignorance isn't the only driving force behind crimes. I'm not sure there is a solution, because of the diversity of the crimes committed. :)
