in this day and age.... access to healthcare should be a right, not a privilage. Especially when you take into consideration the amount of money being spent on other useless and pointless things that do not benefit America....like the war in Iraq.
That's not socialism....thats modernization.
btw- Congress and the Senate get free healtcare for themselves and their families, FOR LIFE ! All citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan get Univeral healthcare, paid for by the US war fund. So when your representatives argue against Universal healthcare.....they're realy just argueing against healthcare for you and me.
For those who want to talk about work.... well... I work. I work my @zz off...and I still can't afford healthcare for my family.
Millions of uninsured Americans are forced to use the Emergency room, for non-emergency healthcare.
simply put..... it isn't right. Things need to change. We need to take out the middle man. (insurance)

Why are a lot of Americans against a socialist program? Oh, wait, I answered the question already.
Why on Earth would I want to trust my health-care to be run by the same people that created the terrible morass that is the modern US government. Its just more bureaucracy?
Why should the government have anything to do with the medical field, other than making sure doctors are obeying the law? Free enterprise is the best way to make a system work. The more the government gets involved, the more the system gets slowed down and messed up.
Why should some be forced to carry more of a financial burden for others who carry none?
"Universal health care" means that it is universally crappy.

The thing about it is, here in America we spend more on health care than most industrialized nations and get less for it. Why? Because our system only encourages us to go to the doctor once we are already sick. Preventative healthcare is actually much more efficient.
People say, "I don't want to pay for someone's healthcare who doesn't work." Well what do you think happens now? By denying them the right to see a regular doctor when they are somewhat sick (have strep throat) you make them wait until they have pnemonia and have to go by ambulance to the hospital and then you really fork over the money. It will actually cost a lot LESS.
People just refuse to learn the facts. They just like to feel elitist and special and want to make sure that the "have nots" stay as far away from the "haves" as possible. It makes them feel good to know they are better than someone else.
Oh, and by the way, in Canada, you can get private insurance if you want it. Universal healthcare isn't mandatory. It just makes sure that everyone has some sort of healthcare.

If the govt. runs the health care system, it has to be budgeted for. What happens if you are very sick the year that congress gives themselves a big fat raise but in order to do that they cut the health care budget? Look at the school system. I send my child to private school because the local public schools are awful. I have to pay tuition to the private school AND pay taxes to the public school that was not doing its job. Right now you have a choice in the Dr. you want to pay for their services. With the govt. system, you will have to go to the Dr. they choose. The private system with still be there and they will have the best Dr.s and hospitals. The problem will be that if you want to use the private system, you will still have to pay for the govt system whether you use it or not.
One of the biggest causes of the rising health care cost are the multimillion dollar law suits. Whenever the govt. says "We want to help you." WATCH YOUR WALLET.

If you play football, why should I pay for your broken leg?
If you don't exercise, why would I pay for your diabetes medicine?
If you eat fast food, why should I pay for your triple by-pass?
If you don't wash your hands, why should I pay for your strep throat?
If you have unprotected sex, why should I pay for your AIDS treatments?
If you drive 100mph on wet roads, why should I pay for your wheelchair?
If you smoke 3 packs a day, why should I pay for your cancer treatments?
If you use the "5 second rule", why should I pay for your illness?
If you eat sushi or other raw food, why should I pay for your food poisoning?
Virtually all illness and injury is as a consequence of your own choices and actions. Stealing money from somebody that makes good decisions (eat right, exercise, wash hands) to pay for someone that makes bad decisions is just plain evil.
If you want to help pay for your neighbor's medicine, you are free to do that. But it is wrong to use the government to force people to do that.
...
Yes, the richest should help the poorest. We SHOULD redistribute wealth. However, it must be done out of love, charity, and duty, not because the government puts a gun in our face. It's the difference between sex and rape: consent.

How about because I am already paying for my and my family's healthcare. Under socialized medicine I would wind up not only paying for my healthcare - but that of the local drug addict as well!
Why do liberals always regard 'fair' as meaning: 'making somebody else pay for it?'

whats fair about it? That I work and get to stand in line BEHIND someone who doesnt. PLUS, when you work and pay for your insurance or haelth care (or both insurance doesnt mean free care) you go to the doctor when needed, you do not go for every little cough or sneeze. People who dont work could poosibly spend their days at the docotr because their head hurts or they coughed once that day.
Right now we have programs to help people who do not get insurance through work or cannot afford it on their own, I see no need to take away the free market for completely socialized medicine

Most Americans are against universal health care simple best we can't afford it. It would bankrupt the country. I would love to have health care for all, but until there is a good way for it to be paid for, we are not going to see without a large increase in taxes. I have heard estimates of 70% taxation to pay for universal health care for America.
It isn't that we are bad people, there is just no money for it now. Since the war in Iraq has been costing the nation trillions of dollars.

I think that very few people are against it, the government and political parties are in debt to these big businesses. The Drug co's and the Insurance co's funded their elections so they may have governmental support in their devious plans. Simply put.. These companies own the government and the players. Sad state of affairs!!!!

there are many lies about universal healthcare that people believe just because they heard it on Fox News.
I don't really know what the elected republicans don't like the idea of every person in America being covered if they get sick or injured... why they'd want so many people to die...it's beyond me...
..but that's what they want.
...so they tell fox news what to say...the people who watch fox news take it as gospel truth and they demonize it...
even though it would only positively benefit them... they are blind to what is really happening...all they WANT to see is what fox news tells them they want to see.
EDIT
SWAY 27... you don't know anything about free markets if you think our healthcare system the way it is now, is a free market. there are hundreds of laws which help and hinder every aspect of the industry. a free market is a market which is allowed to exist without any interference from the government.
so you're right... universal health wouldn't be a free market.
but neither is it currently a free market... so that argument is null.
