Actually it was Adolf's father who changed his name and yes enough night club comedians made jokes about Heil Schicklegruber so that anyone who could read ought to know. In fact several political cartoons played on the fact or rather the misfat since again it was Dad who chose the more sonorous Hitler or Hidler or Hadler over the cumbersome Schiklegrubber.

As noted above, it was Adolf's father who changed his name. Adolf was the legitimate son of Alois Hitler, who was indeed born to a single mother whose family name was Schicklgruber. She eventually married the man presumed to be Alois's father, and Alois's name was changed to Hitler. It is probable that in recently-preceding generations the spelling of the name had been slightly altered, likely from "Hittler."
And yes, at the time, everyone enjoyed poking fun at the name "Schicklgruber," and in America and elsewhere on the Allied side, it was almost univerally - though wrongly - believed that it was Hitler's "real" name, and it was also widely believed that he had at one time been a wallpaper hanger (he hadn't).

Read this website:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alois_Hitler
It explains that Hitler's father had his name changed. Hitler's grandmother had a son out of wedlock, so he had her maiden name (Schicklgruber). She married a man named Hiedler (pronounced Heed-ler). As an adult, he registered his name as his step-father's name, and somehow, the spelling "Hitler" was entered. And yes, everyone in Germany knew Hitler was a Schicklgruber!

no they didnt
it wasnt his father as suggested but adolf himself who changed the name to heidel when enrolling in the german army in august 14th 1914 but a misspelling changed his name to hitler. which he liked more because it was more impressive and memorable sounding
