We have two big dogs that didn't even see it. I'm afraid to put down mouse traps or poison in case the dogs get ahold of it. Our house has a crawl space. I'm sure it got in from there. What's the best way to get rid of them?

I have a elite team of 8 highly-trained, combat-ready cats that patrol my house and yard. They work on a per-incident basis and have a 100% rodent disposal rating. Transportation is extra.

You need a trap. Put it in a cupboard or some place where the dogs wont get it. Unfortunately we have been having the same experience as far as crawl spaces are concerned. I never had an issue until we moved into places w/o full basements.
They do make "have a heart" traps also. They capture the mouse instead of killing it. Then If you like you can let it go a couple of miles away from your house.

Ok, since your husband's allergic to cats, you'll of course need traps or something. try getting a gate for your dogs and lock your dogs behind it. Or keep them in a room you know the mouse isn't in. Then, place posioning or traps around the house. Tell your family where the traps are so they don't run into them. If you have a baby in the family, make sure someone keeps a good eye on him/her. And if that doesn't work, try getting someone to come in and help. If you are against killing a mouse, well, I would try some cage thing or trap that, of course, doesn't kill.

Use cheap traditional mouse traps with chocolate as bait.
Caught two last night .box the traps in with bricks or something to keep pets away from it, just leave a small space for mouse to enter.
If you buy the cheaper traps it's less icky as you can just throw the mouse and trap away together.

The mice are looking for food, so put the traps where your food is stored, and shut the cabinet doors. That way the dogs won't be affected. As someone else mentioned, you can also use the humane traps, and you won't have a problem with the dogs.

RE: How to get rid of field mice from a house with a dog, toddler and newborn? Last night my husband saw a field mouse come in through our gas fireplace. This evening I SWEAR I saw it run behind the toy box. I HAVE to get them out of the house! I have a newborn, a 19 mo old (who leaves her food all over! UGH! Probably why we have them inside), and a dog so I am having serious...

I would put mousetraps underneath furniture so that the dogs can't get to them. Make sure they are up against a wall, as that is where mice like to travel. Peanut butter is the best bait to use because it is hard for them to get it off.

I would advise against any kind of poison because you will eventually have decomposing bodies in your house and they smell.

Mix some oats and plaster of Paris and leave it as bait in an area where your dogs won't get to it.
If the mouse eats it, the plaster will set in it's stomach and it will die.
Alternatively, buy a humane trap.

I have 2 cats, and no mice.

But if you don't want cats, I suggest the mint too. Also, look around for any gaps in your house such as around the pipes, stuff them with steel wool, then cover them with caulking of some sort.

Good luck!
