ok guys...Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were great but they were not even in Michael Jordan's league. They played in an era where the average player was 6'1". Russell was 6'10" and Chamberlain was 7'2". The only real competition they had was when they played each other. The average player in Jordan's era was 6'7" and yet he still dominated.

Great question, but impossible to answer. You'll get different answers basically according to generations. I've heard numerous people. Of course "I" feel Michael Jordan "because" he's my generations superstar (I was born in '81). But my grandfather saw previous players as well he says Bill Russell, because he was what Shaq is to the game now. My dad thinks Oscar Robertson because he's the "ONLY" player in history to average a triple double (At least 10 of 3 major stats). Some would say Shaq because he wins championships as well. Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain scored 100 points, but Kobe Bryant scored 87 in only 3 quaters and plays guard. The list goes on. The questions great, but broad. Thanks for your time. Peace.

michael jordan may very well be the greatest player of the current era, but in the early years of the nba the greatest player was surely bill russell. 12 all star appearances, 5 mvp trophies, and 11 championships for which he holds the record of most championships in a north american professional sports league. over his 13 year career he grabbed a mind boggling 21,620 rebounds, and him and wilt are the only players to ever get more than 50 rebounds in a single game. the greatest player in nba history is easily bill russell.

I don't think that there is "one great player" to ever grace the court. There are many but, not just one. All that are being mentioned have/had different attributes that made/make them great players. Take for instants Jordan, you couldn't compare him to someone like Julius Erving because, for one they played in different times of the game. And another being they played different positions. I'm a Jordan fan as much as the next guy but, it would be wrong to the game and it's players to try and say that theres one that is better than all the rest.

No doubt Michael Jordan. He was determined to win everygame. He was apart of the greatest team of all time. (72-10 record with the chicago bulls) He played great defense, he had numerous scoring titles, he dominanted games, he was feared by his opponent, he was a leader, he hit clutch shots, he won 6 championships and 6 finals mvps. He did it all. Magic, Bird, Wilt, and Oscar were also great but everybody wants to like MIKE.

Bill Russell. 5 MVPs and 11 rings, 2 of which as a player coach, along with numerous rebounding records.

IIRC, the average height of centers in the 60's was 6'10. The average height of the players was iirc, 6'5". Except for Slater Martin who is 5'11, the smallest players were 6'0". There were no Isaiah Thomas' or Calvin Murphy's during those times. Hell one of the reason why Red Auerbach was weary of drafting Bob Cousy was because of his 6'1" height which make him one of the smallest players in the League . . . . back in 1951.

The question does not mention NBA player or anything so why did everyone forget Len Bias. If you remember the Celtics traded half their team away for the pick to get him, cause he used to make Jordan look like an amateur. I realize he did something stupid that ruined what his legacy could have been in the league, but Len Bias was amazing to watch. He would have far eclipsed what Jordan did. Amazing that we forget.
