Their hometown was Denver, Colorado and they were known as the Colorado Rockies.

In December 1981, the then owner of the Houston Astros bought the Rockies and moved them to East Rutherford, New Jersey and renamed them the New Jersey Devils. Starting with the 1982-83 season, the New Jersey Devils were a bona fide NHL team.

The franchise itself did start out in Kansas City, Missouri in September 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts, but moved in June 1976 to Denver Colorado due to lagging attendance in Kansas City
