They inhabit very different kinds of forest. African lions range over dry scrubland while Asiatic lions ranged over Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Iran and into the arid forest regions of India. Tigers inhabit forested areas than provide a different cover for stalking. If they occupied similar territory they would be in conflict for prey. Most species adapt to exploit niches rather than face the loss of fitness from direct confrontation. The tiger may have arisen in Asia as a subspecies of the lion occupying differing habitats where the coloration shifts were selected for.
All four of the Panthera species descend from the spotted Lynx-like Ur-cat. All the related big cats retain the spotting at least as juveniles. Tigers spots became elongated to blend with heavy shadows of the forest while lions lost their adult spots to blend with open scrub forest grass covers. These two remain so closely related their skeletons are nearly indistinguishable.
