Physical and mental abstention from sex is an ancient practice that allegedly aids ones spiritual practices. If done properly, it is harmless. However, it can easily transform into sexual repression, which has been shown to be a source of some very unwholesome behavior.

The difference, it would seem, is having the proper attitude towards sex. If you see it as "evil" or "sinful" then that is an attitude of repression. If you see sex as natural, and still choose to abstain, then that is a more wholesome view.

Actually, sex with another is beneficial for your health. Look up the research. Celibacy is not our natural state. I don't get it from a religious point of view, either, because most religions favor procreation at least. ;)

From a health standpoint, it keeps you from contracting any STDs...

Otherwise, it's really just a means of regaining control over your body and showing that your will is more powerful than your primal urges.

Religiously, I agree that we were given the gift by God to reproduce. I think He just wants us to be smart about how we use it.

I think celibicy is a noble but misdirected practice. The intentions behind it are good, but there are plenty of other ways to show your devotion and prove yourself like service to others and trying to be a better person in general.

From a health point of view it is not known to really have any affect on the body. Sex makes you happy by releasing Endorphins in the Brain. Buut so does working out (light (high rep) weightlifting and cardio). From a religious point of view I guess God would love to see someone who abstains from sex just to get closer to him. I hope that helps and good luck.

Celibacy in a religious aspect is similiar to fasting. You do without something that you desire to bring yourself closer in a spiritual sense. Its a sacrifice. Some also believe that it keeps your mind and body pure and clear.

Not sure

Ce*lib"a*cy (?), n. [See Celibate, n.]
The state of being unmarried; single life, esp. that of a bachelor, or of one bound by vows not to marry.
"The celibacy of the clergy."
Hallom.
~ Definition by Webster 1913

While both abstinence and celibacy refer to practices of refraining from having sex, the difference lies in the reasoning for doing so. Celibacy is most commonly practiced by priests, monks, or other members of religious groups who do not allow the members of their group to engage in sex. Celibacy forbids penile-vaginal sex and may even forbid masturbation. Abstinence, on the other hand, is simply a choice that a person makes not to engage in sex until marriage or some other specified time. This decision could be based on religious values, since many religions do promote abstinence, but it could simply be a personal choice to abstain from sex for a while- or forever. People who practice abstinence may refrain from all forms of sex (penile-vaginal, oral, and anal) or they may simply choose not to engage in penile-vaginal sex. Basically, abstinence is commonly a personal choice that someone makes to himself or herself, while celibacy is a choice made for religious reasons.

Celibacy maynot be good for health it's supressing a natural phenomenom, on religion point ,I can;t say their are all kind of wierd things people do in the name of religion. Some women jump on their husbands funeral pyre, and call it Sati, some people kill other people in cold blood and call it holy war.
