Hi,
well two things...
1, the original settlers and discoverers of North America were not English. They were Spanish, Portuguese and (many people believe) centuries earlier by the Vikings of Denmark and Norway)
However, there was a huge influx of English settlers and, as we all know, English became the official language of America. The original English settlers, as history tells us, faced severe shortages of food and, as the day's name tells us, wanted to mark their lucky salvation by a 'feast day' every year at the end of November.
The reason it did not become an 'English' feast day is that, in England there had been no 'salvation' and the day meant nothing to us.
Which brings us to number 2,
There IS a 'thanksgiving day' celebrated in England every year...it is called 'Harvest Sunday' when people thank God for his bounty and for the food that will fill their bellies throughout the coming winter.
Because this is, basically, a religious ceremony, it is now celebrated by fewer and fewer people each year. Also, as it is held on a Sunday, there is no need to take a day off work even if you DO wish to celebrate the occasion.
These days, of course there is only around one person in sixty who actually goes to church each Sunday, so, if effect it is now a 'minority occasion.'
But, here you go...a chance for us to have yet another day off work blown away...pity, eh?
Remember, too, that many countries do not celebrate days that other countries hold sacred. For instance here in Spain at Christmas time only the evening of 24th December is truly celebrated. This is the time when everyone (almost) goes to church to celebrate the ancient birth. It is now, too, that some children get gifts (though most here wait until January 6th-the day of the 'kings')
It is only because the fiesta for 24th, December usually results in a VERY late night celebrating that Christmas day is not worked. Boxing day here never happens...everyone is back at work as normal. lucky England, eh?)
Hope that helps explain a bit for you,
Cheers and happy Thanksgiving Day for tomorrow,
BobSpain

Thanksgiving was a dinner between the Native Americans and settlers. Right before the settlers destroyed the Natives. I don't think there were any Native Americans in Europe at the time.

I think the reason that there is not Thanksgiving in the UK because no one ever had to start from scratch, make new friends, or defend themselves from the unknown. The UK was there and they did not have to go what the colonists has to go through. As for before the colonist started moving, way back when the UK might have been unsettled, they did not think about a holiday such as Thanksgiving or they started the holiday but it was forgotten or unsuccessful.

Thanksgiving was created here by the pilgrims as a way to celebrate the harvest, and that they made it through another year with enough supplies to make it through winter. The indians also celebrated the harvest and they taught the pligrims so much about planting and harvesting in this land and soil. It was only right they share the celebration

You don't have that in the Uk? Wow, um I think they had the celebration in St Augustine with the spanish settlers hundreds of years before Christoper Columbus so it's all a sham either way. Burn the history Books.

America existed before the British 'intrusion/invasion'. The land was populated with Amerindians who are the true Americans. Thanksgiving is not for the so called 'founders' of America but, more so for giving thanks to the Amerindians that provided food and shelter to the 'explorers' that crash-landed on Plymouth Rock. They had no food or water and many were sick but, the kindhearted Indians provided food, shelter and care for the ungrateful invaders who turned around and massacarred the Indians staking claim to their land. So we must take a moment to remember the Amerindians that provided hospitality to the people that came from Britain with their hunger and sickness.

Thanksgiving was supposed to be an annual celebration of the event of the first Thanksgiving - which happened in the US with colonists and Indians.
Do you celebrate the 4th of July?

it was a rough life for those settlers remember. not knowing if they would live or die for various reasons. the traditional thanksgiving is in honor of the harvest and the coming together of 2 very different peoples. i don't see why you guys in the uk can't find reason to give thanks for one thing or another.
