~Hi, Third P!!!
I don't know if hearing is the last sense to malfunction near death. It's my anecdote, at least, that it isn't. I watched someone die rather painfully, and another peacefully some years ago. Each time, it *seemed* as though sight was in fact the last...
She couldn't speak or hear us. At least, we gleaned as much. The doctors didn't know for sure either. She could not respond to us through speech, and did not respond even by gesture or facial expression to our words. We asked her if she wanted to write anything so we could communicate, but she didn't respond. The latter bits led us to believe she didn't indeed *hear* us. But, her eyes were constantly busy and lit up especially when one of us walked in the room. Particularly, her younger son. It was like she was greeting us, so happy to see us, not remembering she had just seen us 5 minutes ago...
So, perhaps, sight is the last sense to "malfunction", as you say. But, I don't really know. What I describe is, of course, just MY anecdote and my experience...
Interesting question, as always, Third P :-).

My hypothesis is that people in comas have been known to come out of the coma and be able to tell others what they have heard. I think that if one is dying from a terminal illness, then the person starts to fade into a coma-like state and eventually passes away. On the other hand if one dies a sudden death or is deaf when they pass , then I could not see how hearing would be the last sense to go. One thing I do know for sure, no one has come back from the grave and validated this theory.

I didn't know it was the last. In sleep, it is the first.
Nancy Reagan said that when the President died, the last thing he did was look at her--the first time his eyes had been open for days or weeks--and that he gripped her hand, then died. His sight would seem to have gone last, as well as that one, all important, long term memory of what was most important in his life.

I've never done credible, (or otherwise) research on this. But in my personal experience, sight is last to FUNCTION Then, sense of touch, which "seems" the last to response to living.

Because you are not using the others, the sense of hearing is hightened. If you are near to death then you are usually unconcious, so eyes are closed, which makes your hearing more acute

I hypothesize that its location to the center of the brain gives it nearer reach to the person in it.
