The molecular and net ionic equations are actually the same. Lead prefers to be in the ionic state vs. the neutral, while copper prefers to be neutral vs. ionic, so lead will be oxidized when added to a copper (II) solution (reduction potentials are evidence of this). However, lead sulfate is insoluble in water, so it will precipitate. Therefore, sulfate is not a spectator ion and plays a role in the reaction.

Pb (s) + CuSO4 (aq) ---> Cu (s) + PbSO4 (s)
