I can close mine but sometimes it just opens and I don't know why

the muscles in your face act naturally, I bet you didn't find it as easier to put mascara on when you "had your mouth closed" than when it was opened. Your face stretches, allowing for a wider aplication area and making it easier on you and your face. Try it out and I'll bet your'll be like, "Damn, that guy had a point"

What a fantastic question. I do this too and know all my friends do it. Maybe it is because this is an automatic thing when concentrating really hard, my ex used to do this when he played the piano. I think it takes more muscles to close your mouth than open it. That's why when you see a dead person they usually have their mouth open (not that I have seen that many).

Lol I think it's b/c we're trying to be careful. Not to mention the fact that if you tilt your head rull [even when not applying mascara] your jaw gets pulled down and the mouth just opens or is more comfortable open.

I've never put mascara on with my mouth open, but all my friends do, it's so funny looking.

For exactly the same reason that us men open our mouths while cutting our faces with a blade in the morning.
It helps tighten the skin or something like that.

Haha! Oh yeah, I never thought of that before. Maybe because its easier if your eyes are wide open, and opening your mouth stretches out your face more.

women tend to have that problem alot they open there mouthwhile applying makeup, open there mouth while driving, here are some other things they do while opening there mouth
sleeping
eating
talking
walking
chewing
there are many others but i guess they do these things because they are multi tasked
