The day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is frequently referred to as Black Friday.
General Use: One of the major U.S. holiday shopping days. The day many U.S. consumers begin Christmas shopping. The day is heavily promoted by retailers.
Origin: The origin of Black Friday comes from the shift to profitability during the holiday season. Black Friday was when retailers went from being unprofitable, or "in the red," to being profitable, or "in the black", at a time when accounting records were kept by hand and red indicated loss and black profit.

Black Friday
1. A day of stock market catastrophe. Originally, Sept 24, 1869 was deemed Black Friday. The crash was sparked by gold speculators, including Jay Gould and James Fist, who attempted to corner the gold market. The attempt failed and the gold market collapsed, causing the stock market to plummet.
2. The day after Thanksgiving in the United States. Retailers generally see an upward spike in sales and consider this to be the start of the holiday shopping season. It's common for retailers to offer special promotions and to open early to draw in customers.
Investopedia Says:
1. The term "black" has been used to describe other disastrous days in financial markets. For example, on Black Tuesday, Oct 29, 1929, the market fell precipitously signaling the start of the Great Depression. Additionally, the largest one-day drop in stock market history occurred on Black Monday, Oct 19, 1987, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted more than 22%.
2. The idea behind the term Black Friday is that this is the day in which retail stores have enough sales to put them "in the black" - an accounting expression that alludes to the practice of recording losses in red and profits in black.

This can be taken it two way, Black Friday for one can but used when it comes to shopping, it's make or break when we are Christmas shopping, it gives the store owners an idea on what to expect for shopping as the holidays get closer, there is also the financial side to this, it could also mean that the stock market took a major hit, this happened on a Friday, some years ago, when the Dow Jones lost over 500 points in a single day.

It's the offical kick off shopping day for the holiday season. It's crazy!! People line up outside doors at like 11 pm on Thanksgiving to be in first to get what they want. I'll be no where near the malls or anything. Stores usualyl open around 4 am. If you're into saving a ton of money then go on that day but otherwise stay far away. Happy Holidays

A day for retailers to get in the black (profits). The day after Thanksgiving - with sales starting very early in the morning - that kicks off the holiday shopping season. Retailers often offer large discounts to draw people into their stores to shop.
