That's a huge place with a broad question. It depends what you like, cities, nature, beaches?

If you're short on time, the Boston to Washington trek is great to experience some of the best US cities (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington). San Francisco to San Diego is great as well.

My favourite cities are Chicago, Boston and San Francisco, in that order.

relies upon the place youre going from and how lengthy you want it to be. And what you're into. places Ive lived: Philly - large historic attractions and loose excursions. to no longer point out a cheese-steak from Pat's or Geno's (identification say Geno's) Pittsburgh - particularly an surprising city to bypass to. Andy Warhol museum and Carnegie technology middle in the experience that your into that. A holiday on the incline and a sandwich from Primanti's is very pronounced, as is going to a Pirate's interest, in spite of if basically for some innings (percentPark is incredible, and an surprising view of the city). And a walk via the Waterfront. Then spending nights on the Strip District (no longer what curiously like -- bars and golf equipment, yet no longer strip golf equipment) and Station sq.. NYC - Battery Park downtown is a alluring walk. Chinatown, Little Italy (that's somewhat little, yet nevertheless), Wall highway, floor 0, impressive of The Rock, primary Park, etc etc. So those are some innovations. desire I helped.

the US is huge - where are you starting from? We like to mix big cities with scenery .. so for example

Las vegas with Sunset Canyon, Grand Canyon and the national parks to the North ...

from Phoenix to Sonoma and Flagstaff to the North and then to the old Missions to the South and the Desert Museum ...

The Houston - Dallas - Austin Triangle in TX

Highway 1 Big Sur from LA to SF, maybe down as far as San Diego.

Chicago and then Wisconsin and the west side of lake M to Green Bay

New York and the Hudson valley

Bosotn and New England

DC and the colonial past and the hill line drive N-S all within a days drive

The Coast Highway which runs from Southern California all the way to Washington State. A bazillion things to see and do along the way, and its spectacular. Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, many, many indian ruins like Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, and that it just a small taste of the amazing things to see in America!

I LOVE the Smoky Mountain region of Tennessee. Pigeon Forge is packed with things to do, like Zorb (read about Zorb at http://www.blog.sophiesmountainoverlook.com). It's the only place in North America that has Zorb.

Also, people rent out their chalets for CHEAP! Again, check out http://www.sophiesmountainoverlook.com. I've stayed in the area many times over the years and have always loved it!

San Fran is very nice since there's plenty to do in and around the city. You don't need a car in the city but you may want to rent a car for a day or two and take some day trips along the coast perhaps to Monterey or to the vineyards.
