If so what do you do, and what do you say to them without being rude, or are you rude if they get on your nerves.

This is no joke, I have a guy at work that has been buttering me up big times. Having worked at my job for over 30 years, I have alot of "work friends" who know more than they should about my personal business. One guy knows what a hard time I have had making up a will without having any family. The few close friends I have do not want to be responsible for my estate when I am gone, because they have gone through estate nightmares with their parents.Anyway, this guy has done almost everything trying to get me to make him my beneficiary.I find a real strange. He tries to get in my face almost every day with a real pushy behavior. It is definitely getting on my nerves. I have gotten to where I don't answer my phone or door when he calls or stops by.

Yes, I can tell when someone is buttering me up. It is such a turn off that it tends to make me want to refuse the request that is the reason for the buttering.
I prefer honest and straightforward. Fake flattery will get you nowhere with me.

If I can I try to turn it into a joke and laugh it off. I find flowery compliments a little difficult to bear and as a result perhaps because of pain in finding such things are often insincere I find even mild compliments difficult no matter how sincere they are

I tend to avoid people as they only taste like chicken and I prefer seafood. Well, that and I'm not a people person. Prefer my privacy and peace and quiet. Now, back to World of Warcraft and my "non-life" free of hassles such as people buttering me up. Oh the sarcasm of it all.

Some people are just like that all the time. Too sweet and it sounds like they are buttering you up. I know one like that. I dont let it bother me because the opposite would be worse.

In a joking voice (& frame of mind) I say:
"Are you trying to butter me up here? Hummmmm!!!!
If so, then you will need a biscuit to go with the butter."
That let's the person know I am wise to their game.
No one is injured by harsh words & may have a laugh to boot.

I just ask them why they are buttering me up. And if I don't get any answer, or a satisfactory answer, I just ignore the comment and carry on as usual.

What a cynical lot you are, why on earth would I want to creep and try and get on your good sides far better to stay here in the comfort of the darkness.
