My mother-in-law hit our car and there is about $1000 worth of damage. My father-in-law is dragging his feet paying us....he is saying "i'm not sure if I'm going through insurance or out-of-pocket." Basically he keeps flip-flopping back and forth.

I want to be fair to my wife because she is handling this, but I also want our car fixed. The accident happened almost 3 months ago and it is still not fixed, and he has not paid us. One other thing to add is they took on two mortgages....so they are a little tight right now...but really, that is a choice that he made...call me hard-hearted.

What can I do or say that is diplomatic that will get results, get the money for the repair, maintain my relationship with my wife, and move on with our lives.?

I have been burnt by family before where money was concerned. I would fix the car, and tell the wife that her father can just pay the two of you back when everything is a little better in the pocket book. This may make him what to pay you quickly. Then again it may not.....If nothing else, they did raise a wonderful daughter that is now your wife. This maybe one of those times that is just is going to suck....I feel that family is way more important then any amount of money.
hope it helps

Fix the car yourself and move on with your life. The longer the car remains damaged the more resentment you will feel. Just hand Dad in law the bill.

If you have collision insurance of your own, use your own insurance and let your insurance adjuster recover from the in-laws.
