The American dream has been something the rest of the world has wanted for themselves for a long time. That is one of the many reasons we have so much imigration, both legal and illegal.
If we adopt the same socialist programs as the rest of the world, don't we become like the rest of the world? What happens to the "American dream"?
I've never heard of "the swedish dream, or the Danish dream!".
Why would we want this?!!!

Socialists, liberals, neo-cons. The American dream is a marketing ploy. The American reality is financial debt and being abandon by all leaders in a time of need. All politicians are more loyal to big money interests and power

Let me ask you something. I am an American, born and raised here. What is the American dream? Can you really answer that question for me. No you cannot, Because, my American dream is probably different than your American dream, and mine came true, I'm living my own American dream. It just cracks me up when people say, I want the American dream. Are you referring to the American dream with a house with a white picket fence, a wife, with 2 kids 1 boy and 1 girl, and 2 dogs and cats? Well that to me is very lame, to you it may not be, but hey that is what makes us all different from each other. Well, that is not the dream or wish that I wanted or wanna live, and like I said, I am living my own American dream!!! My own dream came true... If we all were the same, with the same dream, same way of thinking, same values, than this world would be pretty dam boring, wouldn't it be?

No, we don't.

What is the American Dream? Who's definition do you refer to? Most of the people I know want to take care of their families, help the next generation do a little better than the last, maybe own some property. Somehow I don't think it's "own the latest gadget, SUV, biggest home, aspire to be like some Hollywood star, have a life like a beer commercial" although that is what the media would like you to believe. Some might eventually achieve that, but how many others can't? Paying exhorbinant costs for day care for a couple of kids, rising healthcare costs, the cost of gas... the so-called American dream is bankrupting us. What you are calling socialism would be leveling the playing field a little.

But that'll never happen, because someone might actually have to give something up. Meanwhile, should dental care be a privilege or is it a part of the American Dream?

it is the reason i like the republicans...they're so predictable. concern, concern, and extra concern; then we (the republicants) will defend you. it is basically unhappy that it extremely works so nicely. I understand that when 30 years of dumbing (that’s no longer even a observe) the yank public, they'll have faith in spite of the "good" says. each time there's a shift in American questioning, and human beings start up asking the government to do extra for the citizenry; republicans bypass off the deep end. each and every application turns into too high priced. Then they start up applying warm button words; socialism, taxes, wealth redistribution, quotas. They be responsive to those words solicit an emotional reaction. apart from, they additionally be responsive to that with over fifty 3 hundred and sixty 5 days of brainwashing the yank human beings, those words have finally end up linked with "undesirable". finally, the republicants are a gaggle of hypocrites, they do no longer merchandise to socialism, wealth redistribution or quotas; that's a question of whom. Republicants won't be able to abdomen the belief-approximately helping the fundamental citizen, it somewhat is socialism; yet they might particular help massive company, the extremely-rich, and protection rigidity contractors. in this modern administration, in case you had to be an envoy, all you mandatory to do grew to become into donate $one hundred thousand to the campaign. The administration has decrease very almost each and every application, vetoed each and every bill congress exceeded to help the fundamental individual, and delivered away the very freedoms that the country grew to become into based upon. even regardless of the indisputable fact that, it is fantastic as lengthy as that's not socialism. presently under the unPatriotic Act, the government can come into your residing house and not applying a warrant, take you away, lock you away in a secret detention center for as lengthy as they see in fantastic condition. you haven't any longer have been given the incredible to an criminal expert or have your case extra to courtroom...yet that’s ok, its no longer socialism. there is plenty much less to concern from socialism, than from fascism. unhappy to declare, this administration is approximately as fascist because of the fact the Reich. salaam, shalom, peace

A HUGE part of the American dream came from the fact that the North American continent was left largely unexplorered into the 1800s - and it was bursting with natural resources, including oil. Oh yeah, gold, lumber, the whole bit.

That, plus our enlightened (at the time) views on religion, free speech, the rights of prisoners, etc.

The idea of "getting it rich by hard work" required a society with the freedoms to change your class (or to eliminate the concept of class), not capitalism run amok.

And do you see many Danes or Swedes these days clamouring to be let into the land of the Dream???

In a socially fair society there is no need for dreaming. If everybody gets a fair chance as a matter of course, why dream instead of taking it?

The American Dream in the US is what Marx called religion: opium for the masses. Of course an awful lot of you seem to have got religion as well ;-)

America is not a socialist nation, never has been, never will be, it is hyperbole by the fundamentalists to use scare tactics and empty words to win elections by votes from an uninformed and ignorant populace.
