has stopped working, its stopped playing cds as well, any help apreciated .

Can the drive read anything? Here are your steps.
1) Put in a data disc and see if you can 'Explore' the cd. If you can explore you have software issues going on.
If that doesn't work.
2) I would then check the IDE cables inside the computer just to make sure everything is hooked up.
If it appears that everything is hooked up.
3) Put in an extra cd rom, just basic one, nothing special. And once again try and explore that.
If that works then you've got a bad drive. If it doesn't work you have other issues going on.

try a lens cleaner?
otherwise, its a trip to the shops to buy another im afraid.

I WOULD UNINSTALL THE PROGRAM AND REINSTALL IT......
