They were both born in 1813 and both were primarily opera composers. However, while Verdi carried on the tradition of 19th century opera in the footsteps of Rossini and Donizetti (albeit with a much enhanced sense of drama), Wagner forged new paths with his 'music dramas' such as Tristan & Isolde, Parsifal and the Ring Cycle of four massive operas. He introduced the idea of the 'leitmotiv' (certain themes associated with and used for specific characters) and he pushed the boundaries of harmony far beyond where they had been before (setting the scene for composers like Bruckner, Mahler, Schoenberg and Berg).
Verdi was a traditionalist (although his works are not 'old-fashioned'), while Wagner was a musicial revolutionary.

They both lived in the 19th century. They both wrote very grand opera. They both chose themes that were classic and heroic. Wagner specialized in Norse legend, whereas Verdi chose themes from history, and Shakespeare.
I'll keep thinking.
