I read about it not too long ago. He is an Indonesian guy. Warts grew all over his body and gradually they turned into tree-like form. I think the article that I read said it's caused by Human Papilloma Virus. I couldn't believe it!!! I thought HPV caused genital warts, cervical cancer.... But hey I'm not a doctor or anything. I saw a short doco on him as well. He's such a soft spoken man etc.

Yes, I've heard about it! No, I don't think it's a hoax, because a local television sent some journalist there to do a story on him. Poor guy, he was in the newspaper not so long ago too. Warts or something. I dearly hope he gets the medical attention he need, and soon! Perhaps there will be a fund opened for his treatment so we can all send a little help. Imagine being in that state!

Yellow Shopping Trolley is right. They think it's caused by a severe case of HPV. The growths (called Cutaneous Horns) just continue growing outward. They're pretty much just skin with a high keratin content (similar to fingernails). They're not that common, but when they occur, they are usually very small. This man has a very severe case.
The growths have a rough texture and contain pigments, so they look like tree bark, but they are a completely different thing.

I heard ... don't know the source... that there were three men,
from among who one looked like like a tree-man.
Anyway, the three were walking branch in branch until they
reached the treeline-pub and there they got trunk... sorry, drunk.
Then the tree-man branched his needle ... the other two sent
their leaf to the police .... What a FOREST !

The Green Man
What is it that can capture a heart and take it to a peaceful awareness instantly?
Many say, "A WALKING TREE MAN".
The crowd is stunned. People, begin moving more slowly, breathing deeply. They seem to drop into that meditative state where we’re connected with the true reality of life.
The walking body of a tree with the mask of a man is an image that can only inspire awe in the hearts and minds of those who see view it.
This archetype, of ancient origins signifies rebirth, renewal, and life, is the image of the GREEN MAN
He symbolizes our ineffable connection with Mother Nature.
Sometimes it’s the kids who see what’s going on first. Then that brings on a frenzy of photo snapping and comments like, “That’s the best costume I’ve seen in my life!” “Absolutely incredible!” “Wow!” “Amazing!”
What most don’t see at first is that it’s a 12 foot tall, stilt-walking, 3-dimensional sculpture of a living, mobile and animated TREE MAN / GREEN MAN.
We people used to believe we belonged to the Earth and said, “We are yours.” Modern man says to nature, “You are mine.”
Now, the GREEN MAN returns, so that we may all agree that, “We are all ONE!”
The GREEN MAN has been walking the planet from California to Times Square, helping people wake up to our responsibility to the Earth on which we live. May we ALL find that healing.
