I am assuming that you mean the 5 layers of space that surround and protect our planet and not the ethereal "atmosphere" as in mood or aura created by stimulatory properties. So in answer to your question, we need our atmosphere because it holds in and makes available the various gases, liquids and solids that make life on this planet sustainable. Some layers of the atmosphere are permeable and will allow the "bad" gases (those we don't want to accumulate) to pass through and the good gases like oxygen to stay earth bound. It is in essence a "membrane" that cleans our upper world. Weather is also regulated by our atmosphere and weather systems are moved by our atmosphere. Some layers are stable and wide and some are less so. Our atmosphere protects us from heat that would kill us (the full force of the sun) and deflects other harmful substances that float around out in space. Gravity and earths forces are atmosphere dependent as well. Those my friend are only some of the "needs".

If you mean, what do we need the atmosphere for, then there are a couple of answers. But probably foremost of these would be the fact that the atmosphere plays a very critical role in regulating the amount of energy--as well as light, heat, radiation--we get from the sun.
With this in mind, it would be very easy to imagine how important the atmosphere is in our planet. It's presence--as we know it now--supports the environment we live in, the way it works, and therefore plays a major role even with the continuation of life.

The atmosphere is an insulating blanket protecting the earth. It softens the intense light and heat of the sun.Its ozone layer absorbs the harmful ultra-light rays of the solar radiation and thus protects living organisms from extinction.
The water vapour which is present in the atmosphere plays very important role in the formation of clouds and precipitation and without which we will not have drinking water.Further, the water vapour controls the long-wave radiation balance of the atmosphere and also determines the atmospheric stability.
