Silverswords are a plant found only on the Hawaiian islands. They are closely related to (but cannot interbreed with) the Tarweeds of western North America. This is a good example of speciation that occurred between two populations due to geographic isolation.

the two ground squirrels found in the grand canyon. one species lives on the north rim and the other the south rim. the colorado river separates the two species from one another and hence allowed for enough differentiation to occur so that they can no longer breed and produce viable offspring. this example is a much better one of allopatric speciation than the previous one given in that the hawaiian birds mentioned is a better example of the founder effect. granted it is allopatric speciation but I believe the squirrels are more appropriate due to the closeness of the two species to one another.
