I find that I read too much which results in information overflow that I fail to remember most of it later.

How about you?

Yes.

And also yes on the 'read too much'. But your memory isn't really designed to be perfect, only to retain information that is of some use to you to remember. So it's not about remembering a particular piece of info that you only encounter once. It's about being able to have lots of information coming at you and pull out and remember the useful info, as in things that are repeatedly similar and may be of future use. This is why it's better to go over material several times, and learn over time instead of trying to cram all at once.

Reading a lot is rarely a bad thing. Even if it doesn't seem like you're remembering that much, your brain often works on deeper levels, and you'll still be pulling out information that is beyond just the surface details..

Now that is assuming you're talking about a real subject, science etc. Things like trivia or celebrity gossip etc are just facts, random details that don't really have any deeper information to them, so basically there isn't anything there to be learning except for the surface details..

Once I tried to join a course to develop extra ordinary memory. One of my friends, Gangdharan, told me not to go for it.He said my life will become miserable if I loose the God given gift of forgetting things. He said that one of your relations has done some good things for you and sometimes he was against you. Though you have reconciled with him now, the moment you see him ,you will remember all the negative aspects of him too. I saw good rationale in his words and then never tried to sharpen my memory.Good memory brings lot of pains and discomfort.

I've never had a good memory. If it's something I'm interested in I can retain the information but if it's not really interesting my brain seems to press the delete button!

I have a very good memory for telephone numbers and peoples names, articles I have read or occasions I have been to, but give me information overload and I'm totally lost.

You don't want or need to remember everything. Only important things. I'm bad with peoples names.
