with the Family / Working Tax Credits system which is means tested?
It seems parents who claim child benefit are being labelled scroungers, but do you know anyone who doesn't claim it, regardless of income?
Is it best not to answer a question about child benefit if you clearly know nothing about it?

I agree that the tax credits system is fairly confusing but I can only imagine those who call us scroungers, do not have children therefore have no idea how child benefit works
I admit I claim working tax credits, but thats there to pay towards my childcare costs so I can work, its hardly lining my pockets!

your implying that no parents works therefore those who do work are paying for us
Do you know how utterly ridiculous that sounds?
I work, so does my partner, we both pay our taxes so YOU are not paying for my son thanks

Ive seen some answers that imply that CHB claimants are scroungers. Its ignorance. Even Gordon Brown will get child benefit for his kids........but I bet his details arent on the discs.

Nice question. IMHO, people who can't even fathom out the difference between Child Benefit (paid to everyone with a child of 16 and under) and Tax Credits aren't even worth worrying about. If they can't be bothered to find out the difference, ignore them!
Mind you, it is a fairly confusing system. Even the Child Tax Credit and Working Families Tax Credits are two different things!
All I know is that I'm entitled to Child Benefit and a tiny amount of Child Tax Credit (hardly worth it), but not entitled to the Working Families Tax Credits. Hey ho!

NO! Child Benefit is claimed by anyone with children. Child Tax Credit is a means tested benefit and is generally for the lower paid.

I don't understand the problem people seem to have with child benefit all of a sudden. Every parent is entitled to it and no I don't know anyone who is entitled and doesn't claim it. If people want to get on their high horses about where their tax money is going maybe they should complain about the tax money used to fund the royal family rather than complain about it being put towards helping families to raise children.

I have no problem with benefits for those that need them. The child benefits system is outdated and I believe it should be means tested, as you said, everyone is entitled to claim is that bit that gets me. As an example, a football player earns £100,000+ per week, do they honestly NEED £18.10?

According to the BBC website there is almost a 100% uptake for Child Benefit. I certainly don't know anyone who hasn't bothered to claim it even those who could live without it.
I think some people see the word benefit & jump straight on their soap box.

Every single British Child, regardless of class or parental income, has a right to Child Benefit.
I don't know any parent who does not claim this for their children.

WELL SAID ....
Everyone with children get it so i don't see why they labelled us as scroungers ..
If they have kids and don't claim it then more fool them. Even the stars claim it
Mine pays for my daughters school dinners...my Baby's nappies & milk.. so it all goes on the kids

It appears some people are getting their facts wrong.
I know people from a vast range of income levels who claim it, not just those who are unemployed or on low incomes.
Even Princess Anne claimed it for her children!
