Every election I have voted in we have had to use pencils..Why?
This question shouldn't spark to much emotion...or could it?

Good question ........maybe they don't trust us with pens or Crayons ?

Err.... I never thought about it or why - but I did my postal votes always with biro hmm.....
But anyway....
"The AEC are required by law to provide pencils in polling booths. Pencils don't run out, they can be stored between elections and they work better in tropical areas. You can use either a pen or a pencil. The security of your vote is guaranteed as the storage and counting of ballots are tightly scrutinised."

We use pencils so that our vote can be erased. I have thougth this for the last 30 years.
I will be marking this election with my own pen. Lets put it out there to all our friends and family to mark their vote with pen. Lets see if we can email this request as far as possible in the next few days.

Because everyone would pinch the pens. I was once told that all elections were decided before we vote, that's why we use pencils. But we don't believe that do we?

Automatic scanning equipment reads pencil marks better because they are more opaque to light. Coping machine also reproduce pencil mark better than ink

I think it is because pencils are more reliable and clear to read? I am not sure, but its always been that way.

They're easy to erase and change your vote.
