Is it just that people still don't notice the unpopular ones, even when they die?

Probably because the dead person didn't contribute anything of actual use to society :O.......and since no one wants to be rude and actually SAY that....they grasp at anything positive they can come up with :).

I'll come back and haunt anyone who's goony enough to say that about ME when I die......

Maybe people want to make it seem like their grieving is worthwhile.
Talking ill of the dead is a major taboo combined with "If you don't have anything good to say...." then you get people who don't say nothing, but end up trying to say good things.
Someone who thinks out everything they say would say something nice to comfort the grieving.

Its just that its a time of mourning, you have to watch what you say. So we say something considerate. Even if we disliked the decease.
