My dad told me (actually several people told me this) I was too nice & would get hurt by people taking advantage of me and my good nature.

My reply to him & them has always been simply, "I may get taken advantage of -- there is always that chance. But if I enjoy helping others, as I truly do, I will continue to help them until they make me stop."

Basically, I do it because I'm an altruist & trust in human nature. Sure I've been hurt once or twice, but never more than once by the same person (except my soon-to-be ex-wife LOL) & typically give people a second chance to redeem themselves. It usually works best that way.

OH yes, most definitely. I have a coworker that has become a person I talk to and all; anyway, his ex needed a starter for her car, and although they broke up and aall, he went and brought her one since he felt she needed one. That couldn't be my ex. He even had a bad breakup with his last girlfriend but he still go and help wash her car(the one he helped cosign on); I'm like I need someone like that in my corner.

No..
“ In life you can never be too kind or too fair; everyone you meet is carrying a heavy load. When you go through your day expressing kindness and courtesy to all you meet, you leave behind a feeling of warmth and good cheer, and you help alleviate the burdens everyone is struggling with. ”
