You might enjoy a book called Reflections. The author is unknown yet the book has the potential to connect with people of any age over seventeen. The book is not a "coming-of-age" story despite the fact that the main character is a teenager. The book is a combination of non-fiction because of how the author uses the setting and situations to vent his own inner frustrations and pain that he held bottled up inside him for so long while, at the same, the story deals with the supernatural. When you get a look at the cover art, you will understand what i am talking about about. How he flows with his words and how he describes certain scenes give his world a surreal, yet deadly serious, feel.
Be warned: The story has a couple of sex scenes yet it is clean, sensual and not overly descriptive. There are no dirty words or euphemisms nor is sex added just for the sake of being there. Secondly, at certain intervals, the story can get extremely violent. Check out the cover art and see what the main character is holding to get an idea of what happens to certain people... not for the squeamish.

Have you tried Science Fiction? My mom doesn't like it particularly, but "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, is a book I would recommend to everybody.
