Read your handbook or company policy regarding electronic media usage. If they say that you are not allowed to use the computer for personal use such as e-mails, im'ing or other issues then yes, you can be fired. Most companies do not allow you to download other programs to the computer unless your IT department does it. A lot of programs have viruses on them, or spyware that could damage your server. If you do bring a virus in, through e-mail or IM programs, and there is damage to the workplace (Loss of work due to computers being down) and you violate the rule of electronic systems usage, understand they have the right to fine you for time lost and damages as well as firing you for doing it.

Firing you seems a bit over-the-top if you are caught. (That being said, they could make you an "example" and do exactly that: Fire you.) Depends on how lenient your boss/es are; most likely, you will be let off with a warning.

I'd advise you to remove any and all non-approved programs from your computer (your employers have the legal right to go through your work computer without your consent so the sooner you do it, the better).

If your office does not allow employees to use Messenger, then if you get caught there is a good chance that you could get fired. Stop using it at work. Use it at home or elsewhere. Not at work.

You've just found a roundabout way to violate office policy that is obviously spelled out for you. I'd say, yes, they have the right to fire you if you get caught...disciplinary action at the very least.

Is it really worth your job to be able to YM?

I hired you to do my work in my computer for x number of hours a day at x pay. That time is mine. I do not expect you to use my time to talk to your friends or surf the web.

Very likely you would. They've told you not to use it, and blocked it.
