Freshwater stingrays are not for the new aquarist nor the casual interest seeker... They require large tanks (100+ gallons), a VERY soft substrate (their skin is very sensitive), soft, acidic water, and peaceful tank mates that will not bother them... You could probably order one for less than $75, but you still have the issue of shelling out a few hundred dollars for the rest of the setup, not to mention religious weekly maintenance and expertise in the area of water parameter control... It might be best to start out with something smaller and easier like tropical community fish (Tetras, Barbs, Loaches, Gouramis, Rasboras, Danios, Cories, Otos, and shrimp) and work your skill level and cash flow up...

EDIT: As another answer brought up, paying for their food alone will cost nearly $25 a month, then factor in the tank, stand, filter, heater, the vast amount of time setting up and maintaining the tank will consume, and all other aspects of keeping stingrays...

I had one about 6 years ago and paid $100 for it. In addition, they eat only fresh food, the favorite was blood worms, so there is the weekly run to the fish store to get those.

They need a soft sandy bottom and close attention to water quality.

They're ridiculously hard to keep alive in captivity. If you've successfully kept fish for several years and know enough about fishkeeping to conisider yourself a master of the science, then it might be worthwhile. Otherwise, you'll just be blowing a lot of money on a fish that will look cool for a couple of days to weeks before it dies.
