I act in a local downtown theater, and am absolutely in love with it. I spend most of my time thinking about it, and look forward to going all week. I am going to be in a production of 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe' starting Friday.

But if I ever wanted to become a professional actress - not necessarily famous, but do it for a living - where would I start? College major in theater?

If you're good enough you can start now. Both of my girls have been paid by theatres for performing in shows. When you look at audition notices, they state whether or not there is pay involved. You do not have to be union to be paid for performing in a show. Many local, regional, professional and dinner theatres, etc. pay performers. The pay will not likely be much but is that really the point? Also, depending on the rules in your state your parents may have to set up a special account to set aside a percentage of your earnings.

I am always a proponent of continuing your education, but to be a paid performer you do not have to wait until you get a degree.

Where do you find your auditions? Try seeing if backstage.com (casting search) and actorsaccess.com have anything in your area.

Good luck,
Marianne
