My son who is 15 weeks old, is having dificulty with his kidneys (or some unrelated issue) where he cannot produce enough sodium and he gets dehydrated. He is hooked to an IV at the hospital and has been there 6 days and 6 nights, tomorrow is day 7. We're supposed to go to a childrens hospital which is about 400 miles away if things don't improve. I am not very wealthy and need some assistance to rent a car to get home when the procedures/whatever is done. Any ideas (Michigan) that would help? And does anyone know anything about Hyponatremia? Any ideas to help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Ask the staff to make a social service consultation regarding your issues with transportation. Make sure they- the nurses- call the doctor early in the day for the consult and have the staff call the Social Worker on-call when the MD gives the OK for a consult. Since htis is a Holiday weekend the SW will be leaving early and if you don't talk to anyone it may be very difficult to get some help before next week. This should have been addressed earlier in your child's stay. If you may have had financial concerns the staff should have noted this and taken this into considersation. If your child is in a larger city hospital then you have more access to the social Service department during the Holiday. Please ask for what you want from the staff and be very clear and kind and you will amazed what they can and will do for you.
As someone else suggested...your church may be able to help.
Good Luck.

First step would be to contact a Ronald McDonald House near the hospital. Also most chldrens hospitals have at least resources that can point you to other resources. Good luck, our little guy was in for 3 weeks. Just poke around the childrens hospital website, and anything have to do with financial counseling. They may even have some kind of transportation services. If you give the location of thie childrens hospital I could possibly give more info.links (also in the midlwest), but will not be on much longer tonight.

Yes, Talk to the hospital (chaplain) they can often times point you in the right direction as others have been through this as well. Also call social services- if the person doesn't know ask who will. You will need to be persistent in a situation like this! Try the "ronald McDonald house" this is a home away from home for families of young children and are usually located by children's hospitals- these are free. As far as Hyponutremia it's a condition where there is an absence of electrolytes causes a slew of problems often cardiac related. This is most common in first time marathoners who over-hydrate and flood themselves with water and deplete the electrolytes. Type it up in search engine for tons of info. Good luck my best is with you and your child.

I don't know about the car rental, but The Children's Miracle Network will pay for your motel rooms as long as your son is in the hospital. Also see if there is a local Ronald McDonald House, they might be able to help. You should defiantly call CMN though, and just ask them how they will be able to help you. Also check with local businesses, since it is the Holiday time of the year they might be willing to donate to you
( money, food vouchers, company vehicle, etc.). I hope all works out for you and your son, and I hope you get to enjoy the Holidays with him(Hopefully back at home and healthy)!

Talk with social services where you son is hospitalized now to see what services they can offer you. You might be able to stay in a Ronald McDonald House where you are being sent since he will be hospitalized there.

You talk to the paedeatrician, looking after your child, at the hospital and ask for advice.

A sick child is hard to deal with. My daughter was a primie and was in the hospital for 1 month. Ask for help from family or your church. You are in our prayers. God bless
