In Buddhism, "living in the moment" has a very specific meaning: what is the truth of your life, right now?

For me, the truth of my life "right now" is that my fingers are moving on the keyboard and my eyes see black type moving across a white screen. This seems very simple, and it is, but many of our relationships are much more complex and the truth can be harder to perceive.

So we practice meditation and other Buddhist techniques, all of which help us more accurately perceive the truth of this moment.

And the benefit of this is that our lives become of greater benefit to the world around us (which includes us). If we can't see the truth clearly, then we can't act clearly with compassion. But if we see the truth, then we're almost compelled to act in helpful ways.

The benefits of living in the moment are that you are free from regret about the past (the things you can't change anyway), and fear of the future (which technically, doesn't exist). The basic tenet of Buddhism is to never experience "attachment to the outcome", which is the basis for all regret, sadness, anger, fear, etc... in the first place.

Whether thinking about the past or thinking about the future, it's always RIGHT NOW. You can't be anywhere else.

So the benefit of living in the moment is that you're living in reality. That's one hell of a benefit.

There is No other moment to live in than Now. There is only now. The past is gone. The future is only a future 'now'. You can only live in the present moment - now.

For me, living in the moment is not possible. But if you can live in the moment, I would imagine it would bring you great joy.
