I barely speak English (someone had to say it). I took some German courses. Didn't help much but I DO know what JFK said though. I wouldn't mind knowing Italian.

I speak French having learned it in school and in Switzerland. I have managed to keep up with it and can
understand and get by in French, some German, learned
a little in school. I took Spanish and Italian in college,
but not well enough to speak these languages. Also had
3 years of Latin.

I spoke Swedish because my grandmothers took care of me and I lived there when I was small. I took Latin, French and Spanish. I understand more Spanish than I speak, but I can get to the bathroom, find FOOD! and a few ditties about working and medical problems. I wish I knew directions though, but then again, I can't find my way around when the directions are in English, so I guess it isn't a great loss. LOL

As a child I spoke fluent Italian [learned to speak a language in Italy before I learned English] -but although I took it agan in college, I still can't speak it! ;-(
I was also fairly fluent in French - can still read it and understand, and if spoken slowly can understand the spoken word. It takes me about 2-3 weeks of being back in a French speaking country to regain some facility with speaking it.
Read some Spanish.
Romance languages was my major in college...eons ago! lol

As a little boy, my Finnish grandmother taught me Finn...but I've forgotten almost all of it since my parents didn't speak it around us kids. I quickly picked up Spanish (had a Castillan Spaniard, Cuban, Puerto Rican and Mexican decent teachers in high school). In my 20 years in the U.S. Navy, I picked up enough of the following languages well enough to get something to eat, not get lost and carry on a limited conversation: French (couldn't be understood in France, but was thought to be Italian when in Tunisia because I spoke French with an Italian accent), Italian (was fairly fluent in that), Japanese (ditto), Arabic, Vietnamese (spoke fairly well but got hearty laughs when reading Vietnamese love comics out loud), and Tagalog (fun phrases mostly). Since retiring from the Navy and working with foreign navies these past 14 years, I picked up Turkish, Chinese (Cantonese..Taiwan), and Hindu. I spent 13 months in Antarctica. Our foreign exchange scientist, Dr. Alexandrovich Zhdanov, was from the Ukraine and taught several of us Russian. The first time I was able to use it, the hearer recognized my accent as Ukrainian. I learned a LITTLE Romanian a year or so ago, while on a project with the U.S. Navy's Second Fleet HQ and coming in contact with a Romanian officer.

I know enough Spanish to get myself into some VERY DEEP kimchee. I truly wish I could speak Spanish well.
I often have to deal with people who speak Spanish only in my duties as a Chaplain and it is almost impossible to minister to someone who has lost a loved one through an interpreter.

I only speak a little Spanish. I took 3 classes, but haven't had enough opportunity to practice to get very good at it. I would love to be fluent in Spanish though.
